    Ransomware attack: the new oil disrupting the old one

    One of the most echoed statements about data is that it is the new oil. Regardless of whether you agree or not with this comparison ; you will surely find it ironic to see how much the decryption of data, this “new” oil, can end up affecting the old one. 

    Last Friday, Colonial Pipeline, one of the largest oi pipeline operators in the United States, experienced a ransomware cyberattack that pushed it to shut down its IT systems. Linked to the DarkSide hacking group, the breach happened on the business side of the company’s IT infrastructure but affected its nationwide operations. 

    Although it is thought the motivations behind the attack were economic and not of sabotage, the incident reignites fears of the dangers hackers pose to a country’s critical infrastructure. Oil prices have gone up due to the supply disruption, with people all over the US piling up fuel reserves. The issue might not be fixed until the end of the week.

    Self-taught robots

    The idea of programming AI systems to teach themselves has been gaining major traction in recent years. Flexible software that is able to learn through experience makes a lot of sense. But our current capabilities in this regard might not be as far-reaching as we think.

    A group of Amsterdam-based researchers built a simple robot and tried to make it learn how to move through trial and error. Made of independent units chained together into a train-like structure ; the robot used a series of inflating pumps to propel itself at a top speed of two millimetres per second. 

    Unfortunately, while the autonomous learning system managed to effectively move, maintain a stable pace and follow a circular track, the robot encountered a few real-world problems that threw all its calculations off. A good reminder of how easily a variable not accounted for can disrupt machine learning algorithms.

    Tackling tech-enabled abuse

    The tech boom caused by the pandemic has brought along some troubling side effects. An increase in online abuse is one of them. With the number of tech abuse cases requiring specialised assistance having grown by 97% over the last year.

    All around the world, domestic abusers use both legitimate online tools and so-called stalkware to harass, control and monitor their partners. Suffice it to say, this kind of behaviour usually predates or accompanies other forms of abuse, from physical to psychological. 

    That’s why the Barclays-backed non-profit Refuge has launched a site to help abuse victims protect themselves from tech-enabled domestic abuse. RefugeTechSafety.org has been built with the help of survivors and provides educational and actionable resources in multiple languages.

    New report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) has forecasted that as much as half of all work tasks could be handled by machines by the year 2025. The rise of machines.

    The think tank’s research, which spanned 300 of the world’s
    biggest companies, estimates that the so-called “robot revolution” will
    create 97 million jobs around the globe but destroy almost as many. 43% of
    respondents felt they were likely to cut jobs due to technological
    transformation in the near future.

    Yet new jobs will emerge as a result, especially in the areas of healthcare, big data and the green economy. However, the Forum is calling for a conscious effort to ensure that no sectors of society are left behind.

    Bitcoin goes mainstream

    PayPal has announced
    that it will start allowing transactions in Bitcoin. The firm will also provide
    support for other cryptocurrencies including Ethereum and Litecoin.

    The new features, which will debut in the U.S. shortly and
    worldwide next year, mark an important milestone in the normalisation of
    cryptocurrencies. 

    The company sees the economy’s shift to digital currencies as inevitable, and it is committed to helping make them easier to use by the broader public.

    The ransomware-as-a-business group DarkSide introduced itself to
    the world earlier this year, issuing a press release where they detailed how
    they picked their victims and pledged to leave non-profits, healthcare and
    governments alone. 

    Well – these cybercriminals with a strong moral code are now
    taking it to a whole new level: they are donating their profits to charities.   

    Two US-based organisations received equal payments of 0.88 bitcoin (or $10,000) in mid-October, money they say they will return as soon as possible. The authorities are warning NGOs around the globe to not accept donations from these cyber schemes, as that would make them legally liable for profiting from crime.

    Google‘s parent company, Alphabet, has presented a prototype for a new line of farming robots to help farmers monitor the health of crops and multiply crop yields.

    Consequently, project Mineral consists of swarms of “robot buggies” that go up and down the fields inspecting every plant. They do so on upright pillars, coasting on top of the plants much like harbour container cranes do.

    Meanwhile Alphabet’s goal is to accumulate large amounts of data about how crops grow to help the agricultural industry tackle the world’s increasing need for food and the sustainability of growing it.

    Microsoft wants to create 1.5M jobs

    In addition, Microsoft has made a pledge to create 1.5 million tech jobs in the UK over the next 5 years, with and additional 300,000 depending directly on them.

    Called Get Go 2021, the campaign targets people currently in
    education, those looking into pursuing a career in tech, and those already in
    tech and wanting to change careers. The initiative is also meant to help those
    whose jobs have been affected by the Covid-19 crisis and bridge the IT talent
    gap. It will be based on education and training programs.

    The company will also leverage LinkedIn data to anticipate the need for more than 3 million skilled IT workers.

    Ada Lovelace Day

    Born in early
    19th-century England, Ada Lovelace was a pioneering mathematician and writer
    chiefly known for her work on Charles Babbage’s “Analytical Engine,” a
    steam-powered calculating machine now regarded as the first fully-automatic
    mechanical computer.

    Although she wrote the first-ever algorithm, Lovelace’s true
    genius lied in her ability to envision the computer’s potential beyond mere
    arithmetic calculations. She is hence considered to be the first computer
    programmer, a “prophet” of the computer age.

    This week we celebrated Ada Lovelace Day, reflecting on women’s countless contributions to science, technology engineering and math (STEM) — something we should honestly do every day.

    Let this day serve as a reminder of how much work is left to do to ensure equal representation of women in tech.

    Robots take the streets & make their first en-masse appearance

    Amazon and its flashy drones. That friendly robot shaking your hand at an
    industry conference. 

    Robots had long appeared ready to make the
    jump to public life. But it took a pandemic to finally start turning the hype
    into reality. That is, of course, aside from industrial automation. 

    As humans fled streets and public buildings
    seeking refuge from the virus, robots started pitching in and even replacing
    them. Grocery delivery, temperature screening, sanitation, information — you
    name it. 

    However convenient robots might be, their growing presence has some people worried. One can understand why when learning about Singapore’s park-patrolling, robotic dogs, which kindly remind you of your social distancing obligations whenever you get to close to another person.

    After much debate and speculation around the
    viability and safety of relying on mobile apps to carry out large-scale contact
    tracing, the use of these apps is spreading. 

    Germany launched
    this week
    its own version, which is based on the platform created by the
    Apple-Google partnership. Switzerland, Ireland and Austria are conducting
    testing, while Japan is expected to announce a Microsoft-powered solution later
    this week. 

    Unfortunately, not everything is going well for all those in these arena. After starting testing in the Isle of Wight, the U.K. has gone quiet about its NHS-developed app. Experts in the matter point at the lack of adoption and Bluetooth problems as the most likely culprits behind the authorities’ silence.  

    Meanwhile, Norway has put on hold its centralized app after a privacy watchdog denounced its unnecessary use of users’ GPS.

    The cloud’s about to burst

    We recently discussed the
    cloud’s key role in a post-COVID business world
    . New developments and information keep highlighting the surge in
    cloud adoption. 

    A new
    study by O’Reilly Media
    published this week revealed
    that over 88% of businesses are on the cloud, with most of them expecting to
    grow their usage in the upcoming months. Furthermore, a staggering 25% of
    respondents said their companies plan to move all their applications to the
    cloud in the near future. 

    Beyond these headline findings, the survey confirms the popularity of the multi-cloud and of microservices. Amazon AWS reigns supreme, followed by Microsoft Azure. 

    Just this week, Microsoft provided more details on how the increase in cloud demand is affecting its infrastructure, forcing the company to expand Azure capacity and implement smarter workload distribution.

    Scary news this week – and not
    only regarding COVID-19.

    On Wednesday, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) — the
    UK’s cyber-defence organ – warned the public about the ease with which
    baby monitors and other smart devices can be (and have been) hacked. 

    The usual culprit? Weak default passwords.

    In one of the creepiest reported episodes, the attacker spoke to a young girl in Tennessee pretending to be ‘Father Christmas.’

    Terrifying. And a good reminder for security experts to take the dangers of human oversight seriously, both at home and at work. 

    Meanwhile, tech
    conferences
    all over the world are being cancelled or going virtual over global infection fears.

    Oh,
    dear. This is shaping up to be another one of those coronavirus
    specials… 

    Facebook’s F8, Microsoft’s MVP Global Summit
    and Google I/O are among the affected events. 

    The latter two companies also announced that they’ll be making their professional conferencing tools available for free as a growing number of firms are encouraging their employees to work remotely.

    have created a robot that taught itself how to walk using reinforcement-learning algorithms.

    It took the robot just a few hours to do what we humans need an average of a year to learn. A promising milestone for artificial intelligence.
