And<br \/>\nespecially Reddit. Mix online stock trading with a pinch of cancel culture and<br \/>\na good amount of memes and, boom: a bunch of Wall Street big shots lose<br \/>\nmillions in a matter of hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Retail investors using low-cost, online trading platforms like Robinhood organised through the &#8216;WallStreetBets&#8217; subreddit to do something they had been wanting to do for a while now: get back at hedge funds and other traditional investors who make money by betting on failing companies (aka shorting).<\/p>\n<p>These<br \/>\namateur traders, who see themselves as part of a new wave of anti-establishment<br \/>\ninvestors, went on to inflate the stock price of GameStop, a now-failing<br \/>\nAmerican brick-and-mortar videogame store. Wall Street had borrowed many of the<br \/>\ncompany&#8217;s stocks, sure these would go down in price and they&#8217;d be able to make<br \/>\na profit upon returning them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ouch. Certainly a clear reminder of the power that the virtual world can have over the real one. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-55817918\" target=\"_blank\">BBC<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Davos goes virtual<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Like pretty much any other large event whose<br \/>\norganisers sport a bit of common sense, this year&#8217;s gathering of the World<br \/>\nEconomic Forum is being held fully online. Its focus this time around?<br \/>\nSurprise, surprise. You guessed it &#8212; pandemic recovery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Specifically,<br \/>\nthe organisation consulted world business leaders ahead of the start of the<br \/>\ntalks conference talks about how technology should be used to help reset our<br \/>\nsociety, economy and business environment.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud and<br \/>\ncollaboration tools to strengthen community ties and help us predict and<br \/>\naddress health crises. Accelerated digital transformation to keep improving<br \/>\nbusiness models and ultimately people&#8217;s lives. Widespread use of AI to automate<br \/>\nrepetitive tasks and allow businesses to focus on adding real, high-end<br \/>\nvalue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The underlying theme: prioritising the common good.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/01\/how-will-new-technology-shape-the-recovery-in-2021-heres-what-business-leaders-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Economic Forum<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2><strong>A five-year timeline for AI in the enterprise<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A newly published Gartner report aims to do<br \/>\nsomething at which most tech predictions tend to fail: getting too specific<br \/>\nwith the time estimates.<\/p>\n<p>The study<br \/>\nlooked at the unintended ethical and social repercussions of AI adoption and<br \/>\nthen provided recommendations on what business should do to address them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By 2025, our world could look quite scarier than it does today in terms of privacy and cybersecurity. Large-scale AI models will be concentrated in the hands of 1% of vendors. Deepfakes will be so common companies will have to conduct regular employee trainings on how to spot them.
