Check out all <a class=\"has-text-color\" href=\"https:\/\/mindquest.io\/en\/blog\" target=\"_blank\">previous chapters<\/a>. <\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2>Chapter 3 : Edna&#8217;s Garden<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0American\u00a0elms\u00a0extended their branches\u00a0across the fence\u00a0that\u00a0separated\u00a0them from\u00a0Central Park\u00a0West.\u00a0Edna thought\u00a0it was\u00a0as if\u00a0they were\u00a0trying to escape the\u00a0park\u2019s enclosure\u00a0and\u00a0reach the American Museum of Natural History\u00a0across the street.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife seeks like,\u201d she whispered almost inadvertently.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPardon me?\u201d Peter\u00a0was walking\u00a0right behind\u00a0Edna\u00a0with her school bag. In normal circumstances, Edna would have carried it herself, but she was beyond tired of not doing anything at all.\u00a0<em>Funny how\u00a0<\/em><em>one can be exhausted from a\u00a0<\/em><em>total\u00a0<\/em><em>lack of activity.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing, sorry.\u00a0Just\u00a0thinking of\u00a0how many things these caged trees and I have in common.\u201d\u00a0Her sigh coincided with Peter\u2019s.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot to say that I agree with the measures taken,\u00a0young lady,\u00a0but\u00a0it must be said\u00a0that\u00a0this time\u00a0you took\u00a0the\u00a0antagonising of your stepmother to a whole new level.\u201d\u00a0Peter\u00a0could not\u00a0hide\u00a0a\u00a0smile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Edna\u00a0smiled\u00a0briefly as well, but her mind quickly went back to mourning her long-lost freedom. Two weeks of monotony and boredom had gone by since\u00a0the incident at\u00a0Bianca\u2019s art party.\u00a0Edna\u2019s\u00a0promising\u00a0live\u00a0data\u00a0model of the pond had sucked up all the power\u00a0from the building in what had\u00a0turned out to be a textbook example of \u201cdon\u2019t bite more than\u00a0you can chew.\u201d\u00a0The party\u2019s guests\u00a0left when it became clear that the power was not coming back any time soon, leaving Edna at the mercy of her infuriated stepmother. Her dad would have plenty to say about this, Bianca\u00a0had\u00a0assured her.<\/p>\n<p>But, not surprisingly, Edna\u2019s had not showed up until later that night. His business commitment had taken longer than expected. So, Bianca had had to impart discipline herself, coming up with an inventive solution to which the tired father had had no option but to agree. End result: no park for a month. No playing in the park, no walking through the park, not even speaking of the park. No park at all.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/share.ebpages.com\/subscribe-to-mcc-newsletter?utm_source=blog%20article&amp;utm_medium=link&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter-mindquest&amp;utm_term=mid-article\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1700\" height=\"610\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1039\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.club-freelance.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/CTA-newsletter-newstand-1.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p>Even though Edna had only endured half\u00a0of\u00a0her\u00a0sentence, the realisation that\u00a0there was a whole other half still left\u00a0to endure\u00a0was\u00a0almost too much to bear. She could almost hear Bianca\u2019s squeaky voice:\u00a0<em>always so dramatic, Edna.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Peter and\u00a0Edna\u00a0got to Columbus Circle\u00a0right\u00a0when it started raining. Just one\u00a0last stretch and they would be home.\u00a0Again.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Who&#8217;s that?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ed, get off of me! I&#8217;m trying to talk to people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are just scrolling down your feed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Edna loved bothering her sister when she was bored. And she had had plenty of that in the two weeks she had so far been grounded for. Her sister was flipping through her social channels on her wristband, just gossiping around. Edna was proud for not being on those things. If you wanted to talk to someone, she thought, you could do it in person. Best to focus on the real, tangible world when not accompanied. <em>People just don&#8217;t know how to be by themselves.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Go play with your things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would if <em>she<\/em> hadn&#8217;t locked up my computer. in the safe. I hate her, and I hate being stuck at home.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s not that bad, you know. You can tell she&#8217;s trying, just cut her some slack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am not into <em>cutting slack<\/em>, or whatever that is, thanks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her sister laughed. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Plus I am missing out on so much data! Last week was peak migration season for the ducks at The Pond. I need that data to make my model work. How many birds, how many younglings, the food they eat, how that will affect the vegetation&#8230; It&#8217;s too complex to go around with a half-cocked data set.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are a funny little nerd, aren&#8217;t you. No worries, siss.
