About\u00a0a\u00a0third of the\u00a0world\u2019s population\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.com\/news\/article-8150501\/Map-shows-worlds-population-coronavirus-lockdown.html\" target=\"_blank\">is\u00a0estimated<\/a>\u00a0to be\u00a0currently\u00a0under confinement\u00a0to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.\u00a0As a result, businesses across the globe\u00a0are resorting\u00a0to remote work\u00a0to\u00a0continue\u00a0operations\u00a0in those areas\u00a0where\u00a0that\u00a0is\u00a0possible.\u00a0This\u00a0is\u00a0adding\u00a0unprecedented\u00a0amounts of\u00a0stress\u00a0to already understaffed\u00a0IT departments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CIOs and\u00a0other\u00a0IT\u00a0leaders\u00a0find themselves\u00a0racing against the clock to adapt\u00a0the\u00a0whole\u00a0company\u2019s infrastructure to a work-from-home scenario while\u00a0tackling their biggest concern: cybersecurity.\u00a0And for good reason\u00a0\u2013 threats are increasing exponentially.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But assembling the right\u00a0security experts &amp; security team\u00a0is proving\u00a0even more difficult than it usually is already.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Security threats<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>give<\/strong><strong>\u00a0no quarter<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Hackers are certainly not\u00a0going to\u00a0close\u00a0shop because of a tiny microorganism. If anything, they\u00a0are using\u00a0it\u00a0to their benefit.\u00a0For instance; phishing emails;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/half-of-firms-have-spotted-a-cyberattack-and-here-is-the-most-common-one-you-will-face\/\" target=\"_blank\">were already<\/a>\u00a0the most common form of attack experienced by organisations. But\u00a0the past days have seen\u00a0a\u00a0great\u00a0surge in attacks\u00a0trying to lure employees into clicking on\u00a0an\u00a0email sent by \u201ctheir boss\u201d or\u00a0containing virus-related information.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Among\u00a0the\u00a0most reprehensible\u00a0of attacks are those being experienced by health\u00a0and medical institutions.\u00a0Not even\u00a0the World Health Organisation was spared,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/topic\/security\/\" target=\"_blank\">targeted\u00a0earlier last month<\/a>\u00a0by a false-domain attack aimed at stealing passwords from agency staffers.\u00a0The situation is so dire that a group of 400 security\u00a0experts from international giants like Microsoft\u00a0and\u00a0Amazon\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insurancejournal.com\/news\/national\/2020\/03\/26\/562409.htm\" target=\"_blank\">has volunteered<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0fight\u00a0hacking tied to the coronavirus.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet\u00a0that\u00a0is\u00a0not the\u00a0main\u00a0issue.\u00a0The pressure\u00a0being put on\u00a0enterprise networks is quickly\u00a0revealing system vulnerabilities. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scworld.com\/home\/security-news\/covid-19-exposes-gaps-in-cybersecurity-safety-net-as-millions-work-from-home\/\" target=\"_blank\">especially<\/a>\u00a0for those companies\u00a0least used to distributed\u00a0work\u00a0and that rely\u00a0too much on local\u00a0networks.\u00a0In short, the\u00a0soaring numbers of\u00a0employees working from home\u00a0are finally\u00a0making\u00a0most decision-makers\u00a0aware of\u00a0what IT leaders\u00a0have\u00a0been\u00a0warning\u00a0us\u00a0for a while. The\u00a0business world\u2019s\u00a0generalised lack of\u00a0a comprehensive\u00a0security\u00a0policy\u00a0and employee\u00a0awareness\u00a0training.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0effective measures like VPNs\u00a0have gained\u00a0adoption in recent years, problems generated by shadow IT\u00a0and BYOD\u00a0remain largely unresolved.\u00a0Many staffers\u00a0will be\u00a0accessing company\u00a0resources\u00a0through their\u00a0personal\u00a0devices\u00a0and networks in the coming weeks. Multiplying exponentially the\u00a0potential\u00a0points of entry\u00a0for attackers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Experts\u00a0<\/strong><strong>are becoming\u00a0<\/strong><strong>even\u00a0<\/strong><strong>hard<\/strong><strong>er<\/strong><strong>\u00a0to find<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>In turn, this\u00a0increase in\u00a0cyberthreats is exacerbating the\u00a0skill\u00a0and personnel shortages\u00a0the security sector\u00a0was already\u00a0experiencing.\u00a0According\u00a0to a\u00a0recent study\u00a0by ISC,\u00a0the global\u00a0security industry lacks more\u00a0than\u00a04 million security professionals.
