Given how competitive today’s IT jobs market<\/a> is, most of us can use a few pointers on how to find a job in IT. <\/p>\n

But, first of all, let’s get something out of the way: the question of whether it is best to look for a job when employed than when unemployed. <\/p>\n

There are many reasons why someone would think looking\u00a0for a job while unemployed is harder. Hiring companies\u00a0might\u00a0be suspicious of your trajectory\u00a0when\u00a0you\u00a0have been out of the game for a while.\u00a0They could think\u00a0you lack\u00a0certain\u00a0skills or drive; that\u00a0there\u2019s something missing\u00a0from your profile that led to you being unemployed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the other hand,\u00a0looking for a\u00a0new\u00a0job when you already have one shows ambition, nonconformity. It\u00a0is proof that\u00a0the\u00a0IT\u00a0talent market\u00a0values you and gives you more leverage when negotiating your contract conditions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Well\u00a0\u2013\u00a0yes and no.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

There are many\u00a0good\u00a0reasons\u00a0for\u00a0an\u00a0IT professional\u00a0to\u00a0be out of work.\u00a0You might be waiting for the perfect project, planning a change in direction. Or perhaps you simply wanted to take some time off after a few\u00a0intense projects\u00a0in a row.\u00a0That\u2019s especially true for freelancers, who often experience employment gaps in between projects.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

These\u00a0four\u00a0simple\u00a0steps can be of help to find a job in IT, whether you are employed or unemployed.<\/p>\n

Develop a solid portfolio to find a job in IT while being unemployed<\/strong> \u00a0<\/h2>\n

Chances are you already have a great deal of experience under your wing. You\u2019ve worked for interesting companies,\u00a0played a key role in\u00a0noteworthy projects, helped bring to light successful products.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Beyond including all that experience in your CV, putting together a short portfolio\u00a0can help potential employers get a better picture of your skills and strengths. It doesn\u2019t need to be a portfolio as polished as. Let\u2019s say, that of a designer or a graphic artist \u2013 a simple explanation of every one of your best projects will suffice. If you\u2019re after a programming job, put together some of your best code.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gather your references<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Nothing validates\u00a0your capabilities better than satisfied former employers. Instead of waiting for the hiring company to ask for your professional references, present them upfront.\u00a0By doing so, you will be showing proactiveness,\u00a0confidence in your professional profile. It will also help you stand out among other candidates.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

A good letter of recommendation by an ex-colleague who is in a good position and\/or company\u00a0at the moment\u00a0can be very helpful as well.<\/p>\n

This is something you should do even if you are not looking for a job\u00a0at the moment.\u00a0Since technology is continuously evolving, your success\u00a0as an IT pro depends in great part on your ability to keep up with the most in-demand skills \u2013 both technical and other, softer skills.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Take advantage of\u00a0the many free online IT courses out there<\/a>.\u00a0Develop new skills,\u00a0challenge yourself. It will show employers you\u2019re not just standing there, idle, that you are ambitious and in constant motion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Find a job in IT by attending industry events<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s true:\u00a0the pandemic has put on halt most in-person industry events. However,\u00a0and\u00a0just like the rest of the business world, these get-togethers are adapting\u00a0to the new reality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Webinars, online Q&As… These events offer a great opportunity for you to gain visibility within the community, to talk or chat to potential employers\u00a0and let them know you are looking to find a job in IT.\u00a0It\u2019s always easier to get your foot in the door through an in-person (or online) introduction.\u00a0<\/p>\n
